The White Shirt has been the fashion world’s best friend for as long as it existed. The white shirt is literally a clean slate—be it for designers, politicians, and even a regular girl. For me though, it’s a step back. On a day I am particularly feeling shaken up, the white shirt is often the feeling of being zoned out; the opportunity to live a parallel life and an alternate reality.
There is an ardent nonchalance in owning a white shirt. And somehow, unlike most things, the white shirt has a single standing identity that never fades away. It completes itself and in fact, makes room for other separates to be clubbed and create a ‘great looking’ ensemble.
It was in the 19th century that women borrowed the white shirt from the men’s shelf. Because women started to wear pants, and needed something more structured over it than a blouse. A little later in time, the white shirt started getting associated with class and elegance, and till date that hasn’t changed. Clothes are suppose to strike your chords, and there’s no denying a white shirt does that well.
When Prerna and I were conceptualising and brainstorming how exactly this shoot should look like, my first instinctive thought was ‘spring’. With the onset of spring (summer for us in India), the bougainvillea’s seemed like the right addition to the purity of the shirt. The flower added that extra zing to the shirt without taking away its essence.
This spring has been a whirlwind of change for Prerna and me. It’s been an extremely crucial time to learn, break-through and self-motivate ourselves to out do our potential. I travelled in and out of four cities in 20 days and the bougainvillea was the only flower that was blooming equally bright everywhere.
And during all of this, the flower has unknowingly tied my thoughts together. Bougainvilleas have no commercial value but it beautifies everything without any added expectations. Naturally, this became the leit-motif for our shoot, which for us meant adding glamour without any pressure. Fashion with comfort. Constant love with sudden change.
